Are you getting ready for Halloween? Can you believe that since I started sewing, I haven’t been invited to a single fancy dress party?! I’m outraged! I’d love the opportunity to make myself a costume. I’ve no idea what character I’d like to make, but I’d want it to include maybe a frock coat, some frills or ruffles, a bit of smocking perhaps, but overall, look really cool!! … is that too much to ask?! … any suggestions?
But in the meantime I’ve consoled myself with a Halloween shirt.
I picked up this great themed fabric in JoAnn when I was in America earlier in the year. It was on sale at $5 a yard (I also got an extra 20% off everything for logging in to the free wifi!)
So I put away the list of everything I was supposed to be doing and made this shirt instead. For a bit of extra ‘fun’ I decided to add a bit of piping to the pocket and the back yoke.
I’d cut the pocket out already when I decided to add the piping, so only the top bit matched the pattern, but I don’t mind that so much as I thought I would… and perhaps the ‘horror’ of an unmatched pocket adds to the Halloween theme? It’s subversive-sewing-horror!
I cut out the fronts separately to make sure the pattern matched across the centre front.
It’s a bit garish, I suppose, for a day-to-day shirt… but pretty low key compared to most Halloween outfits! I love it and plan on wearing it for most of October!
Hopefully next year someone will invite me to a fancy-dress party?
Happy sewing!
Notes to self:
- Don’t be lazy, re cut the bottom half of the pocket next time to match!
- Maybe it’s time to make a proper western shirt now? – all the piping, shaped yokes…
- Costume idea – Haunted Highwayman?
Love it! Such a cool print (well jel that you went to Joanns, btw) and that pocket is soooo neat! 👌🏻 I do love a bit of piping, and speaking of western shirts I have one nearing the top of my to-do list… the husband wanted suede, snaps, piping, the works… I drew the line at fringing though! AND he wants me to draw the shape of the yoke too 🙄 please make yours and it’ll hopefully inspire me to get on with mine 😂
JoAnns was like an alladins cave! (Where everything’s 20% off 🤣) … I’m thinking of a denim & plad mix, but I like the sound of suede… for some unknown reason I have about 3m of mock suede…?! Mines too stiff for a shirt though 🤔. … but , fringing… you might want to consider it 😂🤔 there’s no point going half measures! 🤣👍🙏
I know what you mean about the matched pocket, but I’m always a bit disappointed when I go through the effort of matching and placing the pocket, only to have it completely disappear… I think your piping is a great detail to accent the pocket!
Thank you! There’s no way this pocket is disappearing 😂👍🙏
I think I’d make the smoke coat, fills and smocking anyway! Who needs a fancy dress party to dress fancy anyway ;D
Denim or check shirt next with all the wild west, cattle ranch, hog wrangling trimmings …. can’t wait to see it ;p
Last fancy dress outfits I made for someone were Belle for an elderly lady and Half Snow white half Jack Sparrow costume for her son… depending which way he stood determined which half you saw…. I think it was a Disney Princesses and Pirate party so he chose to be both lol
Lainey x
p.s. did you get any of the printable fabric in your GBSB Live goody bag? Still wondering what to do with mine …mmmmm :/
Printable fabric…? They must have run out of that by Sunday 🤣 I bought some in JoAnns on that same trip though…. net to get a new printer though I think!!
Maybe the cowboy shirt would double up as a woody from toy story costume?!
😊😉👍
My goody bag was for competing so maybe they had different things in them. i got a pack for 4 A4 sheets of various fabrics that I can put in an ink jet printer apparently ….. haven’t a clue what to do with it at the moment, inspiration will hit at some point i guess 🙂
Woody sounds a great idea 😀
Great shirt with great details. And if you plan a fancy dress party, can I come too?? 🙂 I love a fancy dress party and haven’t had the need to make a costume for a looooong time.
😊 you’re on! 👍🎃👻
Nice shirt once again. Loving the black plackets and yellow piping. You’ll certainly have fun making a full Western. I tried one once, but with only minimal success. The yoke was very tricky and never sat right. I’m sure you will make a better job of it.
Maybe you need to arrange the party? That’s what I have to do to get a fancy dress party. Why don’t people want to play? Totally don’t get that.
Good idea! 💡👍🙏
